Getting Started: Not a Lawyer?
In our roles as professional law librarians, we frequently answer legal-research question from those without legal experience. These questions may come from those conducting academic research, or the questions may come from those who want to find information about their own legal problems.
Before we explain any further how to find the law for those who are not lawyers, we need to stress that in many instances, those seeking legal information need to seek the services of a lawyer. The law can be and often is very complicated, very difficult to read, and very difficult to understand. Nothing we write on this site should suggest that there is an easy method for finding the law to solve one’s problem.
Nevertheless, we are often successful in helping individuals find the law they are seeking. There is a considerable amount of legal information available on free Internet websites, and we will attempt to focus on those sites as well as resources more commonly used by lawyers.
Note that you should always be concerned with the currency of legal information. The law changes constantly, and even those resources that are updated periodically may not reflect current law.
